ByGrace Children’s Home Pig!

ByGrace Children’s Home has a few new residents, and Cherie sent us an email with the full story and some fun pictures!

“It was so fun to watch the pig arrive. She was very stubborn and did not want to get out of the truck!

The pig's grand arrival
Pig's Quarters

The truck backed up to a pile of sand so the pig would have a soft landing, but the pig was still scared. Come to find out she was carrying very precious cargo!

Once out of the truck she still did not want to budge, so 4 guys needed to manually lift her and carry her to the pig pen!!! I have a video of that funny transport that we will post later on.

3 days ago our pig had 9 piglets!!!!! One has died but the other 8 look strong and healthy!

Praise the Lord for this wonderful blessing!!! The pig pen is beautiful and will hold many pigs in the future. Pictures of the piglets will come soon.

Bye for now…..
Cherie”

The Children and Visitors

The children at ByGrace have been busy with testing, school, and visitors.  A couple of weeks ago the kids, along with some of the staff and visitors, hiked the nearby hills of Ngong.  It was a fun time for them to get out and have a small adventure.

They have also been participating in Vacation Bible School led by Pauline, Sol, and Albert from Pastor James Cho’s church and Peace to the Nations. A couple members of this team also gave a makeover to the ByGrace gate, providing a joyful welcome to all who pass by and enter through it.

Finally, a few volunteers from California- Cherrie, Peggy, Baraka, and Victor are helping to get the school’s library in order.  They have been working only a few days and have already made significant progress!

As always, there is still much to be done and much money to be raised, but God has provided and will continue to provide for the children and staff at ByGrace.  Thank you for your continuous prayer and support!

The Roof is Up!

ByGrace has many projects currently going on.  First of all, the roof is up! Thank you for your donations and prayers!  The new roof covers the building where the children go to school and where the ByGrace boys sleep. The chapel’s walls are also complete.  A roof will be built in the next three weeks. Last summer the foundation had not even been laid, so progress is being made.

Thanks to some friends, Touching Heart, a second bio-gas unit is in the process of being built and a second cow shed has already been completed.  The biogas unit means that there will be more power for By Grace and the second cow shed allows for more cows and therefore more milk for the home. The cows will be arriving to ByGrace by Monday. A water tower is also in the process of being constructed thanks to some generous donors.  This project hopes to be done by the end of August.  The basketball court that was laid last summer is being used daily for P.E. classes and the garden next to it that was washed away due to flooding has been planted again.

The last few summers have been full of construction at By Grace with many volunteers from Kenya and the United States lending their hands.  This year, the focus has been moved to the slums of Mathare North.  This year in Mathare, the ground has been broken to begin the 3 year process of building a new church.  Foundations for Peace (FFP) began working on this project on the 29th of June and significant progress has been made since.  Three different plots of land were purchased for this project.  All of the houses that were on these plots have been knocked down in order to lay the foundation.  The same volunteers who helped with building at ByGrace the last five summers are currently lending a hand in Mathare.  ByGrace has and will continue to have some teams and individual volunteers working there throughout the next couple of months.  Much needs to be done, but God continues to be faithful in providing the money, supplies, and man-power to work on this project.

Not only did FFP help with constructing the new chapel in Mathare but they also held a teachers’ conference and two free medical clinics.  Both were extremely successful.  The medical clinic welcomed hundreds of men, women, and children from Mathare, including locals, church members, and church staff.    Around 16 local Kenyan doctors partnered with the FFP team which included its own medical personnel and other volunteers.  As you can see a lot has been happening and as always, ByGrace thanks you for your support and prayers!

Emergency Food Appeal

Dear Friend,

Greetings and thanks for your willingness to be part of the ByGrace Children’s emergency food appeal.

Background

The reason behind this appeal is the ongoing famine situation in Kenya (as well as Ethiopia and Somali). This is as a result of lack of rain in the last season. The United Nations and the G-20 group of nations describe the drought that is “ravaging northern Kenya and the rest of the Horn of Africa as the worst in 60 years” (United Nations 2011, Report on Horn of Africa Famine).

According to World Vision Int’l this is “the most severe drought in decades . . . threatening the lives of more than 11 million people – especially young children – in the Horn of Africa . . . Kenya and Ethiopia are also severely affected by the crisis, with millions in critical need of food and water” (World Vision, Horn of Africa famine, 2011).

This famine situation has further been complicated by the inflation that has powerfully affected Kenya. Due to this compounded effect we at ByGrace Children’s Home are struggling to meet our orphan’s food needs. Currently we have 40 orphans living in our children’s home and 50 more kids (including orphans that come for feeding and school during the day). In light of the prevailing famine and inflation the very urgent need for the ByGrace Children is food. At this time, Kenya is also engaged in war with the Al Shabab terrorists in Somali (The New York times, Thursday Oct., 27). This war is predicted to continue for several months and cost the already struggling Kenyan government immensely financially. This situation will definitely complicate the food problem further.

Please consider how you can be involved in providing a meal to these wonderful children in this time of great need.

How You Can Help

  1. Sponsorship: You can choose to sponsor a ByGrace child or encourage someone else to sponsor. Sponsorship ensures that the child will receive food (and education) for the long term- even after the current food crisis.
  2. Contribute monthly to the food program
  3. Make a one time gift in response to the current famine and inflation situation.

We appreciate your thoughtful engagement with the ByGrace children.
